The Bare Bones Trauma Conference evolved from a need for EMT continuing medical education hours that could be offered close to the December 1 recertification date required by the Wyoming Office of Emergency Medical Services.

Starting in 1998, the conference was billed as the Eastern Wyoming Trauma Conference, and it was held in different communities in eastern Wyoming. Initially, classes began at 1:00 p.m. on Friday and were completed by 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. Attendance was small but it wasn't long until Wyoming EMTs learned that it was a quick, inexpensive way to obtain 12 structured hours for recertification.

By 2002, the conference had a new name, 'Bare Bones Trauma Conference' and a permanent location in Cheyenne at Laramie County Community College. It adopted a skeleton in a tuxedo and top hat as its logo and expanded the available recertification hours to 16. At the request of those attending the conference, classes now begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and are out by 5:30 p.m. to allow shopping at the local mall. Saturday classes still begin at 8:00 a.m. and everyone is on the road home by 6:00 p.m.

Due to a generous grant from the Wyoming Department of Health Hospital Preparedness Program, a number of new items will be added to the drawing which occurs on Saturday evening. Individual cash drawings will be held for $100 and (6) $50 each. EMS equipment and a large TV will also be awarded. EMTs must be present to be included in the drawings. Numerous items will also be awarded during class breaks.
